The Gate SPI Wireless is a plug-and-play device. It comes preloaded with default contents, so you can start using it right away without the need to create or upload custom recordings. These default contents allow you to operate the device immediately and verify that your LED strip is working correctly, ensuring that all channels can be controlled from the very first connection.
If you want to go beyond the default setup, you can create and upload your own lighting sequences. Please note that the device does not support live streaming, meaning it cannot connect to the Mapping Tool for real-time playback or editing.
To prepare content:
- Use a virtual controller for recording
- Once the recording is saved to the SD card, the Gate will automatically interpret and play it, even if controllers were not assigned in Mapping Tool
Create a recording
1.- Create a Virtual Controller
Start by defining a virtual controller in the Mapping Tool. Go to the Controllers section and click the “+” button.
In the Device field, leave the option set to “None” and set the number of outputs to 1, since the Gate SPI Wireless has only one data output.
Optionally, rename the virtual controller for easier identification instead of the default “Controller”.
2.- Add Fixtures
Next, define the type of LED fixture you are working with (strip, matrix, or point). Go to the Fixtures section and select the option that best matches your project.
Use the Inspector Panel on the right to configure the number of pixels or the LED type (RGB, RGBW, RGBWA, etc.). The default contents can help you identify the correct LED type and channel order of your strip.
Finally, link the fixture to the virtual controller you created in the previous step.
3.- Add Content
To add content, click on “Contents”. You can choose from:
- Color, Image, Video, Script, Syphon, NDI, Test, or
- From Library, which provides a set of ready-to-use effects.

This is where you design or select what your Gate SPI Wireless will play back.
4.- Set the Recording
Once fixtures and content are ready, set up the recording. Click the Settings button (top-right corner).
Scroll down to the Recordings section and complete the fields.
First, name your recording. Then select your controller.
For the format option, you must select V1.
The destination path is where you want to save the recording file. The default path is /Documents/ProtoPixel/Recordings. If your microSD card is connected, you can save directly to /Volumes/NO NAME.
Finally, select the frame rate. For higher-quality dimming, we recommend using 600 pixels RGB at 60 fps.
5.- Make the Recording
To make a recording, once everything is configured, simply press “Start” to begin and “Stop” to end the process. The file will be automatically saved to the path you defined.
Recordings work like a video capture, so it is recommended to keep them short and lightweight to ensure the best device performance. While recording, a “REC” indicator will appear in the bottom-right corner of the Mapping Tool canvas to confirm that the capture is active.
Uploading a recording
Recordings must be uploaded manually. To do so, remove the microSD card from the Gate and connect it to your computer. Copy the recording file directly into the root directory of the card, no folders are required. Once the card is reinserted into the Gate, the device will automatically detect and play the recording.
